The Indian attitude.

On a lazy Sunday morning I went to have my break fast in a near by homely restaurant. As soon as I entered ,the server guided me to the vacant table. As I was placing my order the server was distracted by a foreigner family entering the restaurant .
The Indian attitude.

He was nervous till I ordered for my “dosa” and all most snatched the menu card from me to give it to the foreigner family . By the time he went to their table most of the servers surrounded their table and were waiting till they placed the order ignoring a customer asking,(actually yelling) for some water. Finally the family of three ordered very little and they finished their break fast and left.By this time when the servers turned back to see the other customers ,the restaurant was almost empty. When the server brought the bill to me. I couldn’t stop asking him ,”Hi “Raju ” did you see how many customers you missed while all of you were paying attention to only one table?.Any ways now that you all have to share the tip from one table among you ,there is not much in it for you .form next time better treat all customers with same interest ” .Raju gave me a blank stare as I left the restaurant.

The so-called ”slave mentality” goes many layers deep into culture. Conversely, people have to rise up from these same many layers to be truly considered free.

Karpagam’s narration shows degrading traditional values, which in case is a great shock. It is not just the hotel server, we find such type mentality else where.

You don’t just see this kind of treatment meted out to foreigners but to celebrities as well. if even a minor Indian TV star walks into a restaurant, the waiters and even the managers fawn over them neglecting other guests. Its a common social value system that’s being applied. Face it, we do not live in Utopia.

Just a thought. Had that foreign family been an african black family, do you think the waiter would have given the same amount of ”respect”? As Indians we tend to idolize all things foreign, and by foreign means white. We feel that the whites are a superior breed and the rest are inferior to us... this, even after decades of independence. Srilankans, Bangladeshis, Burmese, Indonesians.. everyone is a foriegner... but the white man is still ”god” to many. High time we changed out outlook.

Just goes to show our attitude still. Although we have come a long way in the past couple of years...ther’s definitely a long way to go.

I go with what Anupama has said.

It’s time serious legal action to be taken against such discrimination in public places.

The classic ’Post-Colonial Syndrome’ and true freedom is the freedom of the mind and the heart. It is true that people in public places bend over backwards when celebs or foreigners need something. But then it will take a lot more than just put on bravado to get rid of the shackles in the mind!

People are not actually conscious of their attitudes. It comes from deep subconscious zone maybe a ’slave’ mentality within. We need to openly remark strongly against such attitude. So that it’ll force people to think...

Eventhough the British Raj ended long long ago, our not so literate class still prefers to glorify foreigners. Whereas in alien soil an Indian would never beget such attention. One thing becomes very clear : That education is the crying need of the hour.

Actually more than the waiter mentality, I have seen the managers putting more pressure on them to treat the ”special” clients more better with more attention. My mother had an explanation for this that the managers think that these people think that maybe the foreign chaps may order too costly dishes more often and along with this in the eyes of the general customer this may seen that this food joint is seriously good enough to attract foreign customers. But on a humorous side, yeah i have seen people practically drop of all other orders just to reach that ”white” table ASAP. Its not the foreign persons fault to invite such unwanted attention, those poor people just get harassed by these same chaps sometimes.

Yes indeed such sort of behaviour is also seen among the street vendors too where they ignore the local people thinking in mind that they can sell the same old product to the foreigner feeling that he will not be aware of the usual rate, also it is quite common only among the natives who usually bargain for the prices whereas the foreigners just look for the art and are ready to pay the cost for it.

Other than slave mentality I think the greed of getting lavish tips that makes our waiters to put up a servile attitude towards celebrities and foreigner’s. Even if it is out of sheer inferiority complex aren’t we (the erudite society) to blame more than the waiters for our irrational obsession of fair skin and showing a foreign product far superior to our own? Our less learned brethren learn from us. Change has to first come in us. Then only we can change them.

i tend to agree with Leena. Foreigners can give tips that seem small to them but in Indian currency it becomes big. In fact I have also seen foreigners getting charged much more than domestic buyers just to exploit their prosperity!

Well its a a kind of greed for getting more tip from those foreigner guests at their hotel. Because an indian would might give just 10 rs while they would give hundreds or even thousnads. So its lure that fetched each and every server at their table to take the order.
